The Non-Importance Of Words

Ask yourself – which is one of the fastest growing social networks today? App giant ‘Snapchat’ turned down a $3 billion buyout bid from Facebook last year. In the fast world of software it may now seem like an out-of-date story, but the idea of Snapchat is a vital one: millions of people communicating within limited time (10 seconds) through one medium – images.

Alternative media – whether it’s images, videos, or other interactive means – have taken over our digital consciousness, leaving the good ol’ written word with less than 7% of our intake. Whether or not you hark back to the days when people recommended well-written articles to you, non-written media has become a big part of the modern intake - even at the risk of this article becoming extremely ironic.

For those who remember the familiar song that the dial-up modem had to sing, ideas such as Skype may seem like a far cry into the future. But whether or not it seems like something out of a sci-fi movie, communication using both visual and audio feeds is a huge step forwards, whether you’re having a casual chat, a serious business meeting, or even a conversation in sign language.

But you may be sat there thinking that a huge amount of the media that you consume is written – this may be answered with one simple question: is it? With every blog post that is written nowadays, there is usually a video, or a television programme, or a film that is attached. Even if the post is of its own accord, there is an industry-wide demand for a related image, creating a huge boom for a stock-image industry in dire need of a royalty-free boost.

In the time that it took in 2006 for an image to load, it seemed preposterous to think that a South Korean music video could reach two billion views (and that an imitator could reach twenty million) when such data would seem to be so valuable. But in the modern day, when such information is passed so nonchalantly, the idea of running a purely-visual advertising campaign over the internet seems completely reasonable – even obvious.

Coming from a time when television advertising was something of an art form – something to add into folklore – internet marketing seems like a dream come true: and whether Seoul is the place to be for internet connections or not, London is the place for innovative marketing and web design Company UK.
